Hair Extensions . . . the Good, Bad and Ugly

Ugly Hair Extensions

Hair Extension Ugly

Hair extensions are great . . . Stop the presses! . . . Hair extensions are ugly?

My advice on hair extensions has always been . . . good products in good hands they are safe. But like so many other parts of the hair salon business, there are lots of ugly hair extension stories to go around. It seems the media these days has a love, hate relationship with hair extensions either you hate them or you love them. In the space of a 15 minutes this morning while scanning my hairstyle news sources I ran across these two articles. The first left nothing but scorched earth and certainly had nothing good to say about extensions. The second was full of glowing praise. I’ll let you decide who to believe.

Just how safe are hair extensions?

Christina Aguilera have been spotted with temporary bald patches

With the ‘Rachel’ cut, named after her character in Friends, Jennifer Aniston had one of the most in-demand hairstyles of the Nineties. But the actress has revealed her hair was almost ruined by ugly hair extensions.

This way of transforming your look has become popular thanks to the likes of Celebrity Big Brother winner Chantelle Houghton. However, Kate Beckinsale, Victoria Beckham and Christina Aguilera have been spotted with temporary bald patches apparently caused by hair extensions.

Letting your hair down, with a little help from hair extensions

Hair Extensions Popular with Teens
Teens often are where hairstyle trends begin. Thanks to Modbee.com for this great article on hair extensions and hair falls:

Going to great lengths
By RACHEL BEERS
TEENS IN THE NEWSROOM

Most girls know the basic requirements needed to achieve the “perfect look”: the right outfit, jewelry, handbag and shoes.

However, one equally important aspect of one’s look that might not always be regarded as a much-needed accessory is great hair. A hairstyle can make or break an entire look.

No girl, it seems, is 100 percent happy with the hair she was born with; many cut, dye, perm, straighten and curl their locks to give them a look that is unique and makes them feel good. Some of these hair treatments, however, can be damaging. Fortunately, there’s an alternative.

Once used in only the fashion world and Hollywood Hair Extensions are Hot with Teens , hair extensions are becoming more accessible. In just the Modesto area, a multitude of salons offer hair extensions — from the most basic to the most exclusive.

Hair extensions aren’t necessarily expensive, either — it depends on whether the hair is real or synthetic, what kind of hair extension method you choose, and how much you want to add to your hair. And anybody can use hair extensions; it doesn’t matter whether your own hair is long or short, coarse or fine, straight or curly.

Gluing

Hair salons offer several varieties of hair extensions. One of the most common, and least expensive, is the glue-in method. Strips of real or synthetic hair are basically glued onto the scalp. While this is the most affordable approach, it also is the shortest lived; glue-in extensions typically last three to four weeks. The upside to this kind of hair extension is that the tracks of hair only cost around $20 each, plus labor.

Sew-ins

Sew-in extensions are the next step up in quality, durability and price. Tricia Harty at Mosaic Salon on McHenry Avenue in Modesto says she has a wide clientele of teenage girls who come in to get hair extensions sewn in. Typically made of real human hair, the strips of extensions are sewn into cornrows that are braided from your own hair; the extensions cover up the short braids so all you see is long, smooth hair. To have a full head of hair sewn-in, plan on investing around two hours of your time and about $200. Remember, though, that this reflects a full head of hair; the less hair you add, the less expensive it will be. Sew-in hair extensions can last up to two months.

Bonding

If you have the means to pay for it, the bonding method is the optimum way to go. Using a special protein bond, the extensions are attached in portions of about 50 strands each to an equal amount of your own hair, using a tool that resembles a tiny flat iron. Bonding is the most tedious; for a full head of hair, it typically takes two to fiv...

Hair Extensions-How Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton use Them

Hair Extensions

Hair extensions, help for women with thinning hair and spectacular looks for the rest offus

Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton have done more for the marketing of hair extensions than top selling manufacturers of these pieces could ever have hoped for. However, the problem now is, the damaging effects from wearing hair extensions has forced Paris Hilton to give up these long luscious hair extensions, at least temporarily, or risk losing her own hair! Eeek!! Here is the type of question that I get often my class Finding the Right Hairstyle for You!

Do you recommend hair extensions, despite the cost and high maintainance?

,,

In answer to your questions, of what I think about using hair extensions . . . I think they can be lots of fun. Hair extensions can be extremely helpful for women who have thinning hair problems and can totally change your look in an instant! Hair extensions can be used to add length, fullness, highlight and texture to your hairstyle. Hair extensions are not limited to just adding length to your hair as some may think.

So, my answer is yes, go for it, but buyer beware, they also can be painful, damaging to your hair and they can get expensive. So you need to choose wisely on what is right for you.

My favorite hair extensions are the clip-on type. You clip them into your own hair style and take them out at night. Th Human hair hair extensions can be curled, straightened or colored. ese are by far the most user friendly, most economical and most importantly, they are the easiest on damage to your hair. Your choices are real human hair or synthetic hair. Of course, the human hair is more expensive, but a much better buy in the long run. Human hair can be curled, straightened or colored. Synthetic hair extensions can’t be styled, heat will melt it and it won’t hold a set curl. You also have no in-salon costs of attaching, taking out and reattaching these hair extensions.

If you opt to go to a hair salon to have this done, consider this;

  • Cost — most hair salons will charge by the hour for the service of sewing, braiding or gluing the hair extensions you’ve purchased into your hair. Although the hours it will take will vary, the average beauty salon seems to be 4 to 5 hours for a full set of hair extensions. This can easily go from $400 to $1,000 or more. The beauty schools in our area charge $25 to $35 per hour for attaching hair extensions to your hair.
Now keep in mind the gluing technique lasts approximately 5 days, the sewing and braiding about 4 to 6 weeks.
A good question to consider might be, how much are you willing to spend on upkeep?
  • Damage control — gluing, braiding and sewing hair extensions into your hair style results in breakage.
  • Pain — sometimes sewing and braiding can be done too tightly where some women report sleepless nights with the need to return and have them taken out. If you h...
