Men Salons Have a Big Future

Men Salons

Men Salons . . . I can’t believe nobody has taken this concept national . . . it is a real winner

Looking for a new business opportunity? Back on July 3rd I wrote New men salons about a mens salon concept. “Men Salons” Looks like this concept is catching on across the country, but nobody has gone national yet. I can’t believe my friend Ray Barton CEO, at Great Clips, or one of their competitors in the franchise side of the hair styling business, hasn’t gone national with men salons. Maybe they know something I don’t about that market. But I’ll tell you this if I hear about somebody going public with a men salons only concept, I’ll be on the phone with my stockbroker in a heart beat.

Now comes this article from the Los Angeles Times of another local men salon that has done very well in the Los Angeles market. This article goes on to give a summary of what is going on nationally in the men’s hair styling side of our business.

Men Salon give haircuts with style

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

LOS ANGELES - Rob Reed needed a haircut. But the only time the 35-year-old could get one was on a Sunday afternoon, when the Los Angeles Lakers were playing.

So he left his home at halftime, thinking that he’d be back before the game ended. The local branch of a chain salon could give him a cheap haircut, but it wasn’t quick — he missed the second half of the game.

That experience got him thinking: There are millions of hair salons that cater to women — why not men salons?

Four years later, Reed is an owner of Major League Trim, with six barber stations, each with its own 13-inch TV and access to the cable sports stations. It has paintings and photos of sports legends on the walls. A life-size bobblehead of Shaquille O’Neal stands in one corner.

Major League Trim, which opened five months ago, is one of several themed men salons in Southern California that cater primarily to men who are wary of unisex hair salons and find traditional barbershops old-fashioned.

“This is geared toward guys,” said Jess Cortez, 32, who was getting a haircut recently. “Most of the hair stylists at normal hair salons don’t know how to do a fade. It’s all for women. There aren’t any men’s magazines.”

Recent arrivals in Los Angeles include not only the sports-bar look but also places that masquerade as a gentleman...

Mens Salons Just Got Better!

Beer in Mens Salons Not Just For Fun!

I imagine you’ve noticed the mens salons popping up nationwide, from franchised versions to the revised and updated down home barbershops. Mens salons are back with a vengeance and I’m glad to hear it! Guys have needed a place to go that caters to their grooming needs and life style interests.

It was already 4 years ago that I posted this article “ Mens salons have a big future ” which includes a LA Times snippet of a man who saw the market for new mens salons and within 4 years time opened, Major League Trim . . . great name! He was a pioneer in introducing the modernized barbershop including barber stations, each with its own 13-inch TV with access to cable sports stations.

“Mens Salons Inovating With Beer” Since that time there have been many mens salons that have cropped up with services including, scalp and hand massages, hot towel straight edge shaves, shoe shines, manscaping (shaving or waxing off excess hair) and the sale of mens skin care, hair products, sports paraphernalia and even cigars! But recently I heard of the newest mens salons service menu offering, The Beer Rinse . . . Brilliant!! There are mens salons that serve the occasional beer or wine to their clients but, A mens salon in New York City has improved on the concept by offering a beer rinse as a hair service. Using beer as a rinse for the hair isn’t new, but it is new in some salons as a service to add shine and make hai...

Hairstyles for men only

I knew it . . . Just wrote about it about a week ago. I knew we would start seeing new variations on the theme of hair salons who specialize in hairstyles for men only and it’s about time too!

Now not only have we got the high end mens barbershops opening, but a lower to mid-priced franchise for men and boys is ranked as one of the top 50 fastest growing franchises in the country per Paul Bird of the Indianapolis Star. The franchise named “Sports Clips”, originated in Texas in 1994 by Gordon Logan and now has over 340 shops across the countryThe Sports Clips name may be taking some liberties from the Minnesota based Great Clips franchise name.

Great Clips has done extremely well by This hairstyles for
men franchise
is sure to do well. catering to a market who can walk in without appointments and expect good service at a reasonable price. My guess is Sports Clips won’t hurt themselves by having a similar namesake. But I’ll bet my good friend Ray Barton CEO at Great Clips has spent a few bucks with the 3 piece trademark attorney’s over their use of this name. Quite frankly, I don’t know how Ray and his counterparts at the other franchises let this one slip through their fingers. This hairstyles for men franchise is sure to do well. And would have been a no-brainer for Great Clips.

Sports Clips has a large-screen televisions in the waiting area and more scattered throughout the store tuned into . . . w...
